Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. (1 John 5:21).
First of all ‘Amen’ is a universal word which was said at the end of the reading in the Temple or synagogue. Anyone responding ‘amen’ signalled their trust and partnership in what had been said, their ’so be it’. God told the Israelites that they should have no other gods before Him. The things of this world can be our God, money, cars, houses, they rust and decay; our knowledge and interpretation of the scripture, as though we are the sole arbiter of truth, becomes our God. Jesus said to the scribes and pharisees: ‘Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.’ John 5:39, 40). Our greatest prize is our relationship with God, His manifest presence in our life, seek Him, find Him and you will have eternal life.
