Holy, set apart for God

And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council, And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law: For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us. And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel (Acts 6:12-15).

Stephen was one man but such was the power of God in him they needed to raise a mob to take him, such was his witness and testimony of the power of God. They could find nothing against him, so they brought false witness against him. Had they known the King of Glory they would have known that Moses had already been fulfilled and that Moses had rejoiced in that day, no doubt part of the discussion Moses had with Jesus and Elijah on the high mountain when Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James and John. When persecution comes we can be sure it is because what God is doing within us  and through us is doing serious damage to the deception and lies of satan. What then? Do we cower in fear? We do not for God has given us armour and equipped us to fight, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers and the rulers of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in high places. So we put on the armour of God and we stand, blood washed, holy, set apart for God in the Lord Jesus Christ and the power of His name: Jesus is our armour., every piece that Paul describes is found in Jesus. Elisha knew he had the host of heaven around him, his servant feared, but Elisha prayed that God would open his eyes that he might see and declared: ‘Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them’ (2 Kings 6:16). So it is with us. They looked into the face of Stephen and saw the glory and power of God in him, the face of an angel, an angel of the host, the army of God.
