And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit in which he spake. Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God (Acts 6:8-11).
Whenever the fire of the Holy Spirit is moving in a man or woman satan will always send the religious man to try to put their fire out. ‘They need to calm down, their enthusiasm is unnecessary it offends God, they are not healing in the right way, on the right day’, they need to be ineffective like those accusing them. When the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out devils through satan, He asked them with whom did their sons cast out devils. The point He was making was that their sons did not cast out devils. See, the Holy Spirit always upsets the religious man, they work out of the mechanics of doctrine, they live in condemnation so they condemn others, condemnation is all they know. Their doctrine is often man made doctrine, making others stick to their laws, their idea of how God works, but of course God does not work according to their laws and they remain barren. Jesus told us not to prepare anything beforehand but to give an instant answer as the Holy Spirit speaks through us. It works, I prove it daily. God told me not to prepare, not to write out notes, just go when the Holy Spirit prompts, open my mouth wide and He would fill my heart and mouth with the words to say, God is faithful to His promise. That is why these men could not defeat Stephen with their arguments, they argued with God, who told Stephen what to say. The wisdom they saw was not of Stephen but of God. These men saw the inscription God had engraved on the front of the bonnet of the high priest: ‘Holiness unto the Lord’ then they went about their unholy work, inducing men to give false witness against Stephen, the treacherous blasphemy of lies and deceit to falsely accuse Stephen of blasphemous words against Moses and God. Psalm 81:10.
